Through her exploration of bodies of water from a hydrofeminist perspective, Hannah Rowan draws together a liquid relationship between the human body and geological systems. 'By The River' incorporates casts of the artist’s cupped hands that cradle a glass blown vessel that holds rain water and an aquatic plant. The cupped gesture suggests a transient attempt to hold water and evokes the gestures of classical sculptures of water deities to bring forth ideas of ritual and offering. The use of rain water to sustain an ecosystem of pond plants explores the idea of rivers as flowing vessels, containers for sediments and memories.
